Summary

Productivity is considered a key source of economic growth and competitiveness, it is the basic statistical information for many international comparisons and country performance assessments. The positive relationship between the labour productivity and the economic well-being makes it deeply inherent in the policy and economic corridors across global economies. The productivity investigation is particularly important for the GCC countries as the region is moving towards a more sustainable model of development. The region’s historical data helps us to track the productivity prospects and the economic challenges pertinent to the GCC.

Labour productivity analysis has been conducted sector-wise (hydrocarbon and non-hydrocarbon) across Kuwait and other GCC countries over the past decade (2007-17). We aimed to find out whether the output per worker has increased or decreased over years and analysed the gaps in productivity between Kuwait and other GCC countries. Based on our research findings, policy recommendations are made to improve the output per worker in Kuwait.
