Executive Summary

The month of November saw Obama sworn in for his second term in office, this however did not bode well for the equity markets and shortly thereafter, equity markets saw their worst weekly performance since June. Other precipitating events including the looming fiscal cliff added to the general lackluster performance of equity markets in November. US trade deficit numbers showed an unexpected improvement. Exports were seen rising 3.1% and the trade gap shrank by 5.1%, it was the smallest recorded trade deficit since December 2010 the Commerce department reported. Other data from the United States pointed to a reduction in the services sector, a decline in initial claims for state unemployment and strong month on month growth in US manufacturing, off three year lows reached in October.
